No doubt sick and tired of Velvet Underground comparisons by the release of their third LP This Is Our Music--a particularly apt title under the circumstances--Galaxie 500 backed the disc's lead single "Fourth of July" with a full-on VU cover, the White Light White Heat track "If She Ever Comes Now." The point being that "Fourth of July" itself sounds absolutely nothing like the Velvets: indeed, the serpentine interplay of Dean Wareham's clipped, Morse code-like guitar leads and Naomi Yang's rich, supple bass melody heralds a near-complete break from the fragile dreaminess of previous Galaxie 500 efforts--even Wareham's deadpan vocals and abstractly goofy lyrics seem brand new. As for "If She Ever Comes Now"--yeah, it sounds pretty much exactly how you'd expect.
