Album Review

The Knoxville-based V-Roys were one of the more promising groups (along with such acts as Wilco, Whiskeytown, and the Old 97's) to emerge out of the mid-'90s alternative country-rock scene. Their commercial success, however, never matched up with their critical acclaim. Calling it quits at the end of 1999, the band released this live album as their going-away present. Recorded at the Down Town club in Johnson City, TN, this disc serves up a dozen originals drawn from the band's two full-lengths, along with a handful of covers. The band's strengths are well-displayed in this boisterous set, which ranges from punchy twang rockers like "Cry" to the more bucolic "Virginia Way." Not surprisingly, these live renditions reveal a rawer, more energetic sound than the album versions. The moody "Sorry Sue" gets revved up with more biting guitar work and "Wind Down," which winds up the album, turns into a set-closing blowout. While their standout tune "Over the Mountain" lacks the studio touch of a gentle Celtic tin whistle, it becomes transformed into a roots rock jig. One can triangulate three of this disc's cover tunes (Neil Young's "Motion Pictures," the La's' "There She Goes," and the Replacements' "IOU") and get a good sense of the V-Roys' sound: countrified bar rock with some pop hooks and a scrappy attitude. Are You Through Yet? ends up serving not only as a marvelous send-off, but it also provides a fine introduction to the group for those who missed them the first time around. Singer/guitarist Scott Miller moved on to a solo career, while guitarist Mic Harrison founded the Faults, who originally included the band's rhythm section of bassist Paxton Sellers and drummer Jeff Bills.
