Punters obsessed with British hard rock act
Deep Purple need be wary of their volume in Sony’s
Flashback series. This is not
Purple at their commercial and most powerful heights -- they were recording for Warner Bros. and EMI then. Instead, this is a live show from the 21st century that features all of the band’s hits, save for “Hush,” in a concert setting.
Ian Gillan still sounds great as a frontman;
Roger Glover and
Ian Paice still have their chops as well. Former
Dixie Dregs guitarist
Steve Morse handles the axe hero chores, but sounds more like
Ritchie Blackmore than he does himself -- then again, maybe that’s a good thing. The set contains 20 tracks spread over two discs, and the sound quality is more than acceptable. There is something to be said for truth in advertising, however.
