I had just hung up the phone from Rick Mercer when I saw this tweet. I couldn’t believe my eyes, or why he wouldn’t mention something so big.
He and I talked about his time in Ottawa training alongside Canadian Forces Veterans competing in the Invictus Games. It will be featured tonight on the first episode of the new season of the ‘Rick Mercer Report’.
Rick loves the people in our military. I know this because I watched him in action in Afghanistan when we were on Team Canada together in 2010. The intention of the trip was to lift the spirits of our troops and when our soldiers saw Rick the smiles were instantaneous and the laughs were genuine.
It finally hit me why he didn’t say anything.
Rick Mercer used his interview time with me to shine light on his respected and beloved Canadian Veteran Soldiers and didn’t want the focus to be on his career.
Any wonder we love him so much? Hear it from the horses mouth, or Rick Mercer’s anyway:
The loss of the ‘Rick Mercer Report’ leaves a big void. Who else can mix comedy and politics like Rick Mercer? How about how we feel about being Canadian? I think that Rick Mercer has done as much as maple syrup when it comes to conjuring feelings of patriotism and sweet pride in our incredible country. It’s the end of an era, and a very funny one indeed. Thanks Rick!
