With the fines the Ontario Government is proposing, I’d say unless you are very stubborn (and very wealthy) then distracted driving will; for the most part, be wiped off the roads.
You just won’t be able to afford it.
The Ontario Government and the Police feel that harsh deterrence is the only way to make our roads safer.
Someone loses their life on an Ontario Road – every 17 hours.
Here’s the deal;
*up to $1,000 max, first conviction (I think it’s around $390 right now)
*2nd convictions; 2 Grand max, and $3,000 for a 3rd….with the loss of 6 demerit points with any subsequent convictions.
*Beginners will lose their licenses, with repeated offenses; they’d simply cancel their licences.
Causing Death due to Careless Driving; Up to a $50,000 fine, imprisonment, 6 points and a 5 year driving ban.
The OPP say they have laid roughly 20,000 ‘distracted driving’ fines in 5 years on OPP Patrolled roads.
Do you agree with these tougher measures?
