Today is Freddie Mercury’s birthday (Sept. 05), so lets talk Freddie. He would have been 71 today.
They’ve been talking about this project for years.
Remember when Sasha Baron Cohen was set to take on the role of Freddie Mercury? He was signed on in September of 2010 but thing went sour and by the summer of 2013, Baron had dropped out due to ‘creative differences.’
Queen guitarist/founder Brian May later stated it was a mutual decision and they still got on well with Cohen, but the band felt that Cohen’s controversial presence would be ‘a distraction.’
The new Freddie is actor Rami Malek.
A daunting task no doubt, when you’re playing a flamboyant singer with a 4 octave voice!
The film “Bohemian Rhapsody” is out Christmas of 2018 and the Mr. Robot star is currently working on his vocal chops at Abbey Road Studios.
The plan is to use Malek’s vocals mixed with sound-alike mixed tracks when the going gets tough.
And when it comes to the original vocals, it will get tough.
The movie is being directed by Bryan Singer, who’s last work was 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Singer describes his approach to Bohemian Rhapsody as “not a traditional biopic. It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored.”
“It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration.”
That was Sasha Baron Cohen describing to Howard Stern what happened with his role to play the late Freddie Mercury in a movie about Queen.
And, here is the new guy, Rami Malek on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Watch him put on the Freddy Mercury look alike mustache!
