This is downright scary, and despicably ugly. It makes me feel sick.
It is just so wrong, and if I were Donald Trump I would make every effort in distancing myself from any and all of these activists.
There is a difference between protesting, which is a 1st Amendment right, and disturbing the peace and rebel rousing.
Problem is, the later always use the former as a cover and they essentially pervert the process.
Trump simply hasn’t done a good enough job of making that distinction and he’s got a boiling kettle on his hands, and it’s ready to blow.
In fact, I believe he has used the LCD Factor (lowest common denominator) to prop his political fortunes up.
America is unwell. There will be hell to pay for it.
Despite all of this; I for one, don’t believe in tearing down history.
I don’t think it’s the answer and I don’t believe that looking at our forefathers in a present day lens…is fair.
Times and morals change. That’s how it works.
Not all of our historical figures were fantastic people, and neither are some of our present day movie and music stars and heroes.
Robert E. Lee was one of America’s greatest Generals, and he fought for America in Mexico (with distinction) and later for his home state of Virginia — simply because he could bare to take up arms against his fellow kin in his home state of Virginia.
This was 1861. The Union wanted him to lead them, but he said no; and went onto absolutely schooling the Union Generals in battle until the numbers simply caught up to him.
He was widely praised on BOTH sides, and that includes by Lincoln himself.
He was often outnumbered 2-1 and still found ways to win.
One of the most distinguished men in history, period.
Lee had indeed inherited slaves. So, he was a slave owner as were Jefferson and Washington and many, if not all wealthy southerners (and some northerners for a time also).
Certainly Old Ab Lincoln and the right side won the American Civil War, but even old Abe was unsure whether to make that war about slavery. That came pragmatically.
Lincoln was pragmatic and he made the right choice with the 13th Amendment.
Change comes slowly, but right now we are going backwards in all this.
What is going on in the southern states is sad, but it’s not the fault of Robert E.Lee, Old Pete Longstreet or Stonewall Jackson. They were soldiers. I am sure these men would be appalled in all of this.
Lee took an active role in cajoling his people to move on and accept the results of the Civil War.
He was low-key and contrite. He used his final years up as an educator.
This is what makes America what it is. It’s history has been forged not just in fire, blood and metal; but also in education. It makes America special.
We can’t re-write history. We can’t deny it or become revisionist historians. We need to look up at these statues of men who led because some of America’s people willed it to be so.
And we remember how we got here and we remember the lessons of history as we move along.
It happened, and for those who come along to pervert it; such as some of the Alt Right Nazi’s you will see in this video, well, they are simple perverts, using history as a symbolic foundation that they’ve hijacked not unlike jihadists or dangerous religious zealots.
I warn you this video is graphic, appalling and maddening.
Don’t blame this on Robert E. Lee. He has been hijacked for all the wrong reasons.
