O Canada. Home of poutine, maple syrup, and Mike Myers’ dance moves.
I feel lucky to have been born in Canada. In part because I feel like I’d fail a citizenship test. I admit it. My knowledge of our country is less than extensive. Although amazingly, I didn’t do badly on one of the practice tests. (Doing the morning news has definitely helped me learn more about our fine country.)
A draft version of a new study guide for Canadian citizenship has been leaked. The proposed new guide breaks down responsibilities of citizenship into 2 categories – voluntary and mandatory. Examples of voluntary responsibilities include respecting rights of others and participating in political process. Mandatory responsibilities include serving on a jury, paying taxes, and filling out the census.
There’s also a section called Quality of Life in Canada including information about our education system and health care. There’s even a section to explain Canadian humour that says ‘Canadians like to make fun of themselves’.
I don’t know what they’re talking aboot. haha.
