Yikes. Dashcam footage of a cyclist running a red light near Laurier/Lyon on Saturday.
Thankfully the cyclist was ok – they managed to walk away with just a sore hip. The cyclist has been charged. Scary for the driver of the vehicle though!
See in the video below:

I know we have to share the road – I get it. And biking is great. But I see both sides. I don’t feel safe biking in the city (definitely not downtown). I don’t trust drivers. On the flip side, I also don’t feel super confident in some cyclists. Especially when you see things like this, where they fully disregard traffic signals. (Now maybe it was an accident – people have been distracted and driven through red lights in vehicles before, so maybe this person was just having one of those moments, but still. Scary how horribly this could have turned out.)
I am not immune to making stupid biking mistakes.
When I was 12, I wasn’t so great at the shoulder check. I was turning left and completely oblivious to the motorcycle behind me….until it hit my back tire and sent me flying. Amazingly, my only injury was a broken front tooth.
The moral of the story: Protect your noggin. Wear a helmet. And do shoulder checks.
