I have spent many hours over the years at Ottawa Bluesfest. I’ve bragged about how chill it is. We have brought friends from out-of-town to enjoy it with it.
Call me naive. My daughter wanted passes to see a couple of rap artists, so I listened to them, and they seemed fair enough.
In hindsight, she may have picked the tame tracks. haha
Last night was the first time the park felt unsafe. My soon-to-be 15 year old daughter was also in the park, so I was a nervous daddy last night. I was kicking myself.
Mark Monahan does a great job, it’s a fine line, between staying hip and becoming predictable…. and I am confident he’ll address this with his staff once we rap (pardon the pun) on Sunday night with a great Tom Petty show.
Question is; are certain artists worth the extra security, bad press and potential injuries?
It’s a completely fair question. And it must be asked. I know that moving forward, I won’t be buying tickets, for certain bands, for my kids. That’s condoning some of the less than savory themes presented by certain bands. I don’t like the N-word, thuggery or misogyny. And that’s just parenting.
I believe a world class event, has to stay classy and I have all the confidence in the world that we will here in a city such as Ottawa.
