Yesterday, my sister and I were driving west on Gladstone when we saw a dog running east down the sidewalk…followed by a guy running barefoot after him. So, we turned the car around and decided to try to help. Well….this dog was like the Forrest Gump of runners.
The dog ran all the way down Gladstone, past Preston, up to St. Anthony’s church on Booth. At this point, we were driving alongside the owner so he hopped in the car. Then the dog (Maggie) turned right, ran alllll the way down Booth, past the government buildings, crossed Carling and kept. On. Running.
The owner got out of the car at this point, because we couldn’t drive through the park. Maggie ran all the way along the canal, then up through the neighbourhood just west of TD Place. Somewhere along the way, someone lent the owner a bike, so he was biking after the dog. Then she ran across the Bank Street Bridge, all the way down Bank Street and eventually ended up at Billings Bridge. She finally took a break under the trees there and with great patience and coaxing, 3 of us were able to triangle her and grab hold of her collar. The whole thing probably took about 30 minutes. Insanity!

It was one of those things where you once you start, you have to see it through. And thankfully in this case, it was a happy ending. (There were many cringe-worthy moments throughout the ‘chase’.) Turns out the owner and his wife only got Maggie yesterday – she was a dog sledding rescue. No wonder she could run!!! Hopeful that she’ll adjust well to her new home; clearly her owner – bolting barefoot several kilometres through the city – already really cares about her!
