One of the best vacations you can take in Ontario is navigating the Rideau Canal system and a popular European boat rental company, Le Boat, is launching a fleet of modern, easy to drive boats next summer!
Lock stations allow your boat to enter water that is lower or higher than what you just navigated. Each of the 23 lock stations is operated by ‘lock masters’ who hand crank iron wheels that open and close the gates in the lock. This method has been virtually unchanged since the locks opened in 1832!
When a lock is up, your car can’t pass over. One day while waiting, I decided to give it a try, or at least pretended too!
I am excited for Le Boat to launch their boats on the Rideau because it was via a houseboat rental that I fell in love with the system. Back in our early 20’s, my brothers and I rented one and just a few weeks ago my oldest brother told me that was his most memorable vacation ever!
He has a boat and I sold mine last year, but here are a few pictures from a 2014 trip from Manotick to Jones Falls.
The funny thing about going through the locks is that someone has to hold the rope at each end of the boat, and if it’s raining, too bad!
If you do hit a few days of bad weather, you could always dock and explore what’s on shore. I suggested a legendary hotel in a previous blog. You can’t help but get a little patriotic on the water since nearly every boat has a Canadian flag. It kind of makes you wonder why we don’t do the same with our homes….?
