Great book; great movie!
The book may even be better, but that debate could rage on for a while.
JAWS was released on this day in 1975.
It sure doesn’t feel like a 42 year old movie. It still has a bite. Like Hitchcock, Spielberg doesn’t lose the suspense in the sands of time.
In fact, Steven Spielberg gave us a pretty good sneak peak of future brilliance to come.
He was just 28 years old when he took the late Peter Benchley’s #1 best selling book and set to putting it to film.
The movie was a technical marvel but it was also an enormous, monster endeavor that nearly got shut down by the studio due to delay’s and budget over-runs.
It was worth it. It was an enormous hit, winning 3 Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and it grossed more than $470 million, which was the biggest of its time.
JAWS one of the original blockbusters, and still worth seeing 42 years later.
We all hesitated jumping in the ocean after that one. And it’s nearly impossible to swim, even to this day, without humming the familiar ‘da dump da dump dadumpdadump” refrain.
