What’s your opinion on Canada’s ‘Favourite Scenic Drive’? Favourite National Park’? ‘Best Cottage Region’? How about ‘Favourite Attraction’?? USA Today wants your vote and will release the results in time for Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1st.
I noticed that Ottawa made the ‘Best Destination in Canada‘ nominees 2x! I voted for the UNESCO Heritage Site the Rideau Canal over Parliament Hill.
It’s a 202 kilometer marvel of engineering and offers beautiful views that you can only get to by boat. Many spots look exactly as they did when the canal opened in 1832. They are still untouched by development! To think that it was built solely by pick axe and sweat is mind blowing. I highly recommend renting a houseboat for a week and exploring the Rideau. A great place to start is Rideau Ferry.
More than 1000 immigrants died from malaria building the canal, mostly Irish and French immigrants hoping to find a better life.
Talk about a view that will reconnect you to nature!
Jones Falls Locks is one of my favourite spots. It’s like a Norman Rockwell painting, frozen in time, in the 1800’s. Hotel Kenney has stood at the bottom of the locks for 138 years and offers amazing meals for hotel guests and boaters tired of BBQing.
Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s daughter, said this about Jones Falls: “by far the loveliest place in all of Canada”.
Can you imagine that every stone that you see in the locks was carved and laid by hand?? The Rideau Canal is truly mind blowing and needs to be appreciated.
