One of the most surprisingly good interviews I ever did, was in around Winter 2009.
Chris Cornell was laying low in Paris getting over a divorce, a band break-up (Soundgarden) and getting set to embark on a solo career for the first time in his career.
Known to distrust the media and be quite adverse to talking about himself, they gave the interview to me. Haha. Of course they did. You know, the guy who just had Nikki Sixx slam the phone down on him in the preceding interview? Oh yeah, him. What could possibly go wrong?!?!?
I laid down the devil-may-care, took a chance, and just started talking politics with him.
Obama had just been elected for his first term and the world was swept up in this fantastic wave of hope, and Chris Cornell was obviously fascinated by it. We both were. The supposedly crusty Chris was probably jonesin for political chatter living in Paris and all, and before you knew it, we both simply forgot we were doing an Interview live on the radio.
I also forgot to play my commercials; but thankfully, the bosses were so into the interview, they simply forgot….to give me hell for it.
Glad I caught 25 mins with this guy.
He was smart, kind and engaging and we honestly could have talked for the rest of the night.
We already knew money and fame doesn’t buy happiness, but now we know that talent does not either. He seemed to have it all.
But on the bright side, the Angels in Heaven just got happier. Their choir — just got a whole bunch better!
