Stories of a dark future are more popular than ever, and now a 1985 book by Canadian Margaret Atwood is getting renewed interest. Maybe it’s because of what’s been happening in the United States, or the fact that a television adaptation of the novel is premiering on Bravo. Possibly for both reasons. Either way, it looks like a fantastic show, and it’s getting great reviews! Check out the trailer below and tune in tonight at 9, or set your PVR for it.
The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world.
