The man who played Chachi, Scott Baio, made some eyebrow raising comments this week regarding the death of his former star sidekick, Erin Moran, on the weekend.
He tweeted “You do drugs or drink, you’re gonna die,” which some fans found to be crass and lacking sensitivity.
Baio expanded his comments on a radio show this week;
I’m OK, a little shocked … but not completely shocked that this happened. My thing is, I feel bad because her whole life, she was troubled, could never find what made her happy and content. For me, you do drugs or drink, you’re gonna die. I’m sorry if that’s cold, but God gave you a brain, gave you the will to live and thrive, and you gotta take care of yourself.”
The Tweet is what most likely motivated Erin’s widowed husband, Steve Fleishmann, to post on Baio’s Facebook Page.
Fleishmann posting an open letter detailed Moran’s cancer, which progressed quickly without the couple’s knowledge. Some had speculated that Moran’s end may have come as a result of what many claim was a near lifelong battle with drugs and alcohol…but the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and the County Coroner confirmed that she, in fact, died from complications of Stage 4 cancer.
Fleischmann and Moran, 56, had just returned from celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary in November 2016 when she first started experiencing unexplained symptoms.
The former child star played Joanie Cunningham on HAPPY DAYS, opposite her brother Ritchie (Ron Howard) and her boyfriend Chachi (Scott Baio) for 1o years (1974 -84) on one of the most successful TV shows of all time.
