The first round of Juno Awards were handed out Saturday during a gala at the Shaw Centre.
The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie was the evenings big winner. He received 3 Juno Awards, including rock album of the year for the Hip’s “Man Machine Poem”.
His solo album, “Secret Path”, about Chanie Wenjack, who was an Anishinaabe boy that died in 1966 trying to return home after escaping from an Indian residential school, won 2 awards. For best adult alternative album and best recording package.
The singer songwriter, who is fighting terminal brain cancer, was not in attendance.
