Today, Press Secretary Sean Spicer shocked the media by barring CNN, The New York Times, LA Times, Buzzfeed and Politico — from a White House Press Briefing.
Most of these news services have issued statements protesting this move.
Former Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer told CNN that it is “not unprecedented’ for a President to address chosen partisan members of the Press, and not others. He went on to say that he didn’t believe this was “a threat to the 1st Amendment.” He did suggest however; that it wasn’t the best scenario for a Press Secretary, as they need to engage the mass media as part of their existence.
Personally, I can’t see anything good from publicly inhibiting the free media from access to the President. Besides, what President wants to spend the entirety of his term fighting with the press?
That’s what we seem headed for.
I say that America loses in this case, as him implementing the platform policies that he was elected on…will only get harder and harder to achieve.
We live in interesting times my friends.
