Word from Ottawa City Hall today (Wed. Feb. 01);
A couple of Ottawa City Councillors are working on a motion that would see the Nation’s Capital become an official ‘Sanctuary City’ for migrants caught up in Trump’s latest Executive Orders.
City Councillors Jeff Leiper, Catherine McKenney and Mathieu Fleury are working a motion for presentation at a future City Council meeting.
Other Canadian Cities like Toronto, Hamilton and London have flirted with this idea before, as have some American Cities.
President Trump has threatened to cut funding to any American city that offers this in that face of his present order.
Trump’s action ‘temporarily’ bans foreign nationals from several terrorist-hotbed countries (Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen) from travelling to the United States.
One would assume that migrants caught ‘betwixt and between’ would be offered a safe haven here in Canada.
This motion, although big hearted, is fraught with an endless litany of problematic questions. What of hospital care for the sick? Where do we house them? What if they break the law while they are here? Can they claim ‘political refugee status’ and stay here forever? How much will this cost?!?!?
Yep sounds like a logistical nightmare to me, and I can’t imagine how this could ever be pulled off at a municipal level of government.
This kind of action would demand Federal Government support, and I don’t see that coming with so many important trade talks on the horizon for Justin Trudeau.
Sweet, but can’t see it.
