He was born Farrokh Bulsara in the Sultanate of Zanzibar (now Tanzania) 70 years ago today (Sept. 5th).
His dad worked for the British Colonial Government and they sent their young son to boarding school in India where he became a very quick study on the piano.
Friends said he could listen to a song once, and then sit down and play it on the piano.
Political upheaval forced the Bulsara Family to flee Zanzibar moving to Middlesex, England in the 60’s.
A few years later in 1970, the band Queen was formed. “Freddy” Bulsara (Mercury) used his artistic skills to design the bands heraldic logo himself, paying homage to his families British Citizenship.
Everything about Freddy Mercury was unique. He was flamboyant, theatrical and was blessed with a 4 octave vocal range that absolutely thrilled. He was *made* to be on stage.
Hard to believe he’s been gone for 25 years.
